What is Miles Per Tank?

Miles per tank measures how far your vehicle can travel on a full gas tank. Unlike miles per gallon (MPG), which measures efficiency, miles per tank accounts for your specific vehicle's fuel capacity.

This number varies widely between different makes and models. A large SUV might have a 30-gallon tank but lower fuel efficiency, while a compact hybrid could have a smaller tank but travel further on each fill-up.

How to Calculate Miles Per Tank

MPT = MPG × TS

Where:

  • MPT is Miles Per Tank
  • MPG is Miles Per Gallon
  • TS is Tank Size in gallons

To calculate your miles per tank, multiply your vehicle's miles per gallon (MPG) by its tank size in gallons.

For example, if your car gets 30 MPG and has a 15-gallon tank, your miles per tank would be:

30 × 15 = 450 miles

How to Improve Your MPG

  1. Maintain proper tire pressure. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance and fuel consumption.
  2. Remove excess weight. Clear out unnecessary items from your trunk or cargo area.
  3. Use cruise control on highways to maintain a steady speed.
  4. Avoid aggressive driving. Rapid acceleration and hard braking waste fuel.
  5. Plan your trips. Combine errands to reduce overall driving time and cold starts.
  6. Keep up with regular maintenance. A well-tuned engine runs more efficiently.
  7. Use the recommended grade of motor oil. The wrong viscosity can reduce fuel economy.
  8. Minimize idling. Turn off the engine if you're stationary for over a minute.
  9. Reduce highway speeds. Fuel efficiency typically peaks around 50-60 mph for most vehicles.
  10. Use your A/C wisely. At lower speeds, open windows are more efficient. At highway speeds, A/C is usually better.
